Stonebwoy and Camidoh Top Spotify’s Best Ghanaian Albums of 2023

Published

on

Spotify recently released its annual Wrapped lists, curating the top music, artists, albums, and podcasts as streamed by users over the past year. For Ghanaian albums in particular, dancehall/reggae star Stonebwoy and rising hip-hop talent Camidoh took the top spots.

Claiming the #1 album of the year, according to Spotify’s Ghanaian users, is Stonebwoy’s “5th Dimension.” The 15-track album showcases Stonewboy’s versatility across different sounds and styles. Upbeat tracks like “Gidigba” fuse Afrobeats and dancehall fusion, while songs like “Ever Lasting” deliver more mellow, emotional vibes. This album builds on the success of 2020’s Grammy-nominated “Anloga Junction” and proves why Stonebwoy remains a pillar of Ghanaian music.

Following closely behind at the #2 album is Camidoh’s new “Love Is The Answer” EP. With an infectious blend of highlife, Afro-soul, and hiplife influences, this 6-track project has clearly resonated with Spotify listeners. It offers songs tackling relatable topics like unhealthy relationships and the quest for true love. Since first bursting onto the scene a few years ago, young artist Camidoh continues demonstrating exceptional skill crafting irresistible tunes.

It’s great to see both established and up-and-coming Ghanaian talents featured so prominently on Spotify’s Wrapped lists. Both Stonebwoy and Camidoh had huge years, bolstered by the warm reception to “5th Dimension” and “Love Is The Answer” respectively. Their music is not only connecting locally but, through Spotify’s global platform, now reaching more international audiences. We likely haven’t heard the last from these remarkable artists and anticipate more breakout music ahead in 2024.

Kuami Eugene is a liar and a Jon Boy – Mr Drew attacks

Published

on

Kuami Eugene, a signee with Lynx Entertainment, revealed in an interview with Berla Mundi that he had “bullied” musician Mr Drew into paying him profits owed from the hit song “Case,” which Eugene claimed to have written. Eugene stated that after attempting amicable methods to obtain his share of the song’s earnings, he ultimately needed to retain legal counsel to compel Mr. Drew to “act morally.”

When pressed by Berla on why he resorted to legal action against someone he considered a friend and collaborative partner but did not do the same with musical group Keche, who he alleged also failed to pay him for writing their song “No Dulling,” Eugene explained that he refrained from taking legal action against Keche out of respect for them as veterans in the music industry. He did not wish to dishonor them despite feeling wronged.

Mr Drew chanced upon Eugene’s interview comments and responded by denouncing him as a liar via social media post. Drew wrote, “Aside from the fact that he’s a liar, who made him think being younger than someone is a flex? Jon boy.” This post clearly refers to Eugene seemingly touting his younger age relative to older musicians as some kind of praiseworthy attribute or advantage.

The post also makes reference to including video of the interview and Mr Drew’s reactionary response. Their dispute apparently stems from disagreements over songwriting credits and subsequent royalty payments.
