Rising Star Poet from Zebilla, Mat De Poet Shines at Orijin Untamed Showcase

A promising young poet from northern Ghana is making headlines as a finalist in Orijin’s nation-wide arts competition. Mat De Poet, an emerging talent from Zebilla, wowed judges and earned a coveted spot to perform in the Orijin Untamed grand finale this Friday in Accra.

Mat De Poet, birth name Apiiga Mathew Yidana, brings a unique literary voice to this platform for rising stars in Ghana. His inspirational style combines raw emotion and rich cultural perspective, reflecting his upbringing in the Upper East Region. As one of just 8 finalists selected from a field of gifted hopefuls across Ghana, he carries the torch for young creatives from smaller towns and communities.

Mat De Poet secured his finalist position at one of four regional audition events hosted by Orijin earlier this fall. He advanced through the competitive Bolgatanga auditions as 2nd place winner, earning accolades for his original, evocative poetry. As Bolga’s first runner-up, he beat out numerous others for the coveted chance to be crowned one of the Orijin Untamed Champion 2023.

He now heads to Accra on December 15th with 7 other talented finalists. 4 hail from the capital Accra, 2 from arts hub Kumasi, and 2 represent the vibrant creative community in Bolgatanga. The contenders span music, dance, slam poetry and more – but only one can take home the grand prize of 80,000 GHS and national fame.
