Anthony Awini, popularly known as Great Thony, is undoubtedly one of Ghana’s most accomplished and proficient gospel musicians, songwriters, and stage influencers. Hailing from Atwima Ntensere, Great Thony was raised in the Upper East Region and spent most of his formative years in the Ashanti Region. He skillfully juggled his singing ambitions with a teaching career, working tirelessly to make a mark in the music industry.

Great Thony’s lyrical prowess is drawn from his experiences, relevant issues, and divine inspiration from the Holy Spirit. He completed his junior high school education at Asenemaso D/A JHS in 2008 and pursued his secondary education at Tamale Senior High School, where he offered Visual Arts. He furthered his education at the University of Education, Winneba-Kumasi, where he earned a degree in Basic Education.

After several failed attempts to gain recognition, Great Thony’s big break came when he met top musicians and producers who recognized his unique talent and potential. They recommended and commended him, predicting that he would become a superlative gospel artist, a prophecy that has been fulfilled.

Great Thony’s music journey began in his childhood, singing in the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Ntensere Congregation. He was a praise and worship leader and performed extensively at basic education levels during music and dance concerts. In 2011-2012, he was elected as the Music Director of the Presbyterian Men’s Society Union (PMSU) at Tamale Senior High School. His final performance before completing high school was a memorable one, leaving his fans in tears.

Great Thony has also served as the Music Director of the Prayer is the Key and Rock Assemblies of God. He has released numerous songs, which are available on all streaming platforms. His song, “Nyame Aye Awie,” has been particularly well-received, earning him invitations to high-profile events and interviews. He has also had the privilege of meeting and receiving blessings from renowned gospel musician, Great Ampong, who prayed for him, saying, “I give you part of my anointing, and the whole world will recognize you soon.”

After years of pushing the boundaries as an underground artist, Great Thony’s time has finally come to shine in the mainstream music scene. He has received support from DJs such as DJ K.A, DJ Martins, and DJ Simple, among others. In 2017, he recorded his first song with Randa Stone, followed by the hit song “Adonai,” which brought him into the limelight.

Great Thony’s unique vibe and delivery have set him on an unstoppable upward trajectory. He sings mostly in Twi, and his music has become an integral part of Ghana’s gospel music scene. As his career has progressed, so has his talent. His punchlines have become more clever and considered, filled with heartfelt and true-life stories.

Today, Great Thony is widely regarded as one of Ghana’s greatest gospel musicians. He is a humble and respectful artist who is also known for his comic status, which he uses to attract audiences. His signature phrase, “Great Thony Music… standard,” gives him extraordinary energy during stage performances. Great Ampong, his mentor, has crowned and blessed him to take the mantle of gospel music in Ghana.
