When Iyanya released his hit single Kukere over 10 years ago in 2011, he immediately shot up the musical ranks and became one of the most popular and most commercially successful artistes of the time. He followed Kukere up with other hits including Ur Waist, Sexy Mama, Jombolo, Mr. Oreo, and more.
Then, he went M.I.A. Iyanya completely left the music industry for a number of years and now, all these years later, he is back and explaining why exactly he had to quit music for some time. In his own words, here’s why Iyanya said he had to quit music.

Speaking about if he actually quit music all those years we didn’t see him and why he did it, Iyanya said:
Yeah, I did. I left. Because everything happened so fast you know? I won Project Fame. After 2 years, everything changed. Tours up and down. You know, you need to take some time off and get your mind right and then come back.
First of all let me say big up to my fans, I love my fans. You know with the heat comes the pressure, the ups and downs, and the fans don’t really see all that. So you as the artiste, you have to be honest. Take some time off and do what’s right. So it was very intentional for me to leave and come right back. I knew I was going to be famous, but I didn’t know it was going to be that huge and I wasn’t ready for it. So the effects on me wasn’t good so I had to take some time off.
Being number 1, there is a lot of pressure that comes with that and if you’re not careful, it could break you. I can tell you, the truth is it was crazy. Mentally and otherwise. You don’t know when you become a version of yourself that you don’t even know, you don’t want to be, and you don’t even like. So you need to take some time.
For those 3 years I was gone, I had to shutdown. I had to because mentally I was gone. If I didn’t, I won’t be here today, trust me. Thank God that I’m here today, it’s really good. I advice my colleagues to do same. Every time that you feel it’s too much, just log out.
Well, Iyanya is back once again and he’s released a number of new songs including Call (ft. Ayra Starr) and Like (ft. Davido and Kizz Daniel). From what he’s explained, he also has some new projects on the way that he says we should keep an eye out for.
What do you think of the new Iyanya songs? Do you like his new songs? Do you still listen to only his old songs? What do you think about his reason for leaving? Let me know any thoughts you may have by leaving a comment either below or on my Jide Okonjo Facebook post.
That’s All.
